Governor Caleb Mutfwang Defects to APC, Resigns from PDP in Plateau
Plateau Governor Mutfwang joins APC, resigns from PDP

In a significant political realignment, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The formal presentation of his APC membership card took place on Friday, 3 January 2026, at the Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos.

A Decision for Purposeful Leadership

Governor Mutfwang explained that his choice to abandon the PDP was driven by the current political realities and his firm dedication to providing purposeful leadership for Plateau State. He described the resignation as a personal decision made in the broader interest of promoting good governance and sustainable development within the state.

He stated that he needed an alternative political platform to effectively advance his vision and plans for Plateau. The APC Ward Chairman for Ampang West in Mangu Local Government Area was the official who presented the governor with his new party membership card.

Symbol of Unity and a New Beginning

The event was attended by prominent APC figures in the state as well as members from other political parties. Mutfwang framed his move as a symbol of unity, expressing prayers for a more united Plateau. He declared that his entry into the APC signified the birth of a new party in the state's political landscape.

He highlighted the significance of now being aligned with former Governor Simon Lalong, who is currently a Senator. Lalong was an APC governor, while Mutfwang defeated the APC's candidate, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, to become governor under the PDP banner. Mutfwang expressed confidence that this new alliance would enable them to deliver one million votes for the President in the 2027 general elections.

PDP Reacts, Assures Stability

Reacting to the governor's defection, former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Jonah Jang, responded through his Media Consultant, Clinton Garuba. Jang acknowledged being informed of Mutfwang's resignation from the PDP and subsequent move to the APC.

The statement sought to reassure PDP members, supporters, and the public that the party remains stable, liberal, and firmly positioned to continue playing its crucial role in Nigeria's democracy. The PDP leadership pledged to continue engaging constructively with its members, strengthen internal democracy, and advance policies for inclusive governance and national development. Supporters were urged to remain confident and committed to the party.
