Sokoto Governor Warns Against Politics Destabilising Peace

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has issued a stern warning to politicians against using politics as a tool to destabilise the enduring peace enjoyed in the state. The governor gave the warning while paying Sallah homage to Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar at his palace during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

In a statement signed by Abubakar Bawa, Director General of Media and Publicity at Government House, Sokoto, Governor Aliyu emphasised that the state is enjoying a peaceful atmosphere and harmonious coexistence among its residents. He stressed that this peace must be sustained and that the government will not fold its arms and allow unpatriotic citizens to jeopardise it.

The governor also highlighted that the government is spending huge sums of money on infrastructure development across the state. He warned that anyone found vandalising public infrastructure will be dealt with decisively. “These projects being executed across the state are funded with taxpayers’ money and must be protected by every well-meaning citizen,” he said.

Aliyu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies with all necessary assistance to curb banditry. He described the fight against banditry as a collective responsibility and called for greater collaboration among citizens. “We need to come together and stop the informant syndrome if we are to succeed in defeating bandits,” he said, noting that informants are more dangerous than the bandits themselves.

The governor disclosed that the executive arm of government would soon present a bill before the State House of Assembly prescribing appropriate punishments for informants. He also commended security agencies for their unwavering commitment to tackling insecurity affecting some parts of Sokoto State.

In his response, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar stressed the need for politics devoid of rancour as electioneering campaigns are set to commence. The Sultan commended Governor Aliyu for numerous people-oriented projects, saying, “We are proud of you, our governor, and proud of what you are doing for our people.” He also praised the administration for emphasising Islamic propagation through the construction of mosques and Islamiyya schools across the state.

The Sultan called on the people to continue supporting government policies and programmes at all times. He later hosted Governor Aliyu, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker, and other members of the entourage to a special lunch.
