Ogun State Launches 2,000 Women Affinity Groups to Boost Economic Power
Ogun Establishes 2,000 Women Groups for Economic Empowerment

In a significant push for women's economic inclusion, Ogun State has officially launched two thousand Women Affinity Groups (WAGs). This initiative is part of the Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up (NFWP-SU), aimed at substantially improving the living conditions and livelihoods of women across the state.

Project Launch and Core Objectives

The project's kickoff was announced by the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, on 5 January 2026. She strongly emphasized that the formation of these groups is strictly for developmental purposes and not political. The core mission is to promote financial literacy, entrepreneurship, savings, investment, and economic networking among women.

A Record Achievement in Six Weeks

The Project Coordinator, Bolanle Fadairo, highlighted the scale of this achievement. The establishment of 2,000 groups within just six weeks of the scale-up phase demonstrates the state's institutional readiness and strong commitment to women's empowerment. This milestone has been prominently showcased on the national Project Management Information System (PMIS).

Fadairo described the feat as a powerful motivation to deepen empowerment efforts across Ogun. She stated that the primary goal is to create a robust economic network among the state's women, which will directly lead to improved livelihoods and greater financial independence.

Leadership and Stakeholder Commitment

According to the Project Coordinator, this rapid progress reflects the visionary leadership and unwavering support of the present state administration. She also credited the political will of all key stakeholders involved in the Nigeria for Women Project. Their collective effort has been crucial in translating the project's goals into tangible on-ground structures so swiftly.

The formation of these 2,000 groups is expected to serve as a critical platform for women to access finance, build valuable skills, and increase their social capital. This structured approach under the NFWP-SU is set to create lasting positive change for women's economic participation in Ogun State.
