A prominent youth organization from Nigeria's northern region has publicly endorsed the economic and governance reforms implemented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration. The Northern Youth Frontiers (NYF) issued a statement on Wednesday, 7th January 2026, praising what it termed as bold and transformative policies aimed at restructuring the national economy and strengthening governance.
Praise for Fiscal and Monetary Policy Shifts
In the statement delivered by its Chairman, Sama Musa, the NYF acknowledged that the administration operates amid significant challenges but has prioritized long-term stability and growth. The group specifically highlighted the contentious removal of the fuel subsidy, describing it as a critical step towards fiscal responsibility and sustainable development, despite initial public hardship.
Musa stated that this move was necessary to build an economy less dependent on volatile oil revenues. The NYF also commended the liberalization of the foreign exchange market and the unification of exchange rates, arguing these actions have brought much-needed stability to the Naira. They believe these steps are crucial for attracting foreign investment and boosting the global competitiveness of Nigerian businesses.
Infrastructure and Governance Reforms Highlighted
The youth group pointed to major infrastructure projects as central pillars of the administration's agenda. They cited the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway as initiatives expected to improve national connectivity, cut logistics costs, and stimulate cross-regional economic activity.
Furthermore, the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline was highlighted as a transformative project for Nigeria's energy landscape, promising efficient use of the country's vast gas resources. On governance, the NYF applauded reforms within the Federal Civil Service, particularly new emphasis on rewards and mentoring to foster accountability. Improved border management and digital immigration processes, including e-visas, were also praised as innovative steps for efficiency and security.
Social Welfare Support and a Call for Cushioning Measures
The NYF recognized the administration's social welfare efforts, such as the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund and youth empowerment programs like the Leadership Empowerment and Employment Program (LEEP), the Jubilee Fellows, and the 3 Million Tech Talent (3MTT) initiative.
However, the group did not shy away from addressing the severe economic difficulties facing citizens. They pointed to the surge in inflation, which has exceeded 34%, and the rising cost of living as legitimate concerns impacting daily life. The NYF urged the Federal Government to implement targeted interventions to protect vulnerable populations from the harshest effects of the reforms.
Aligning with the Arewa Joint Initiative for Peace, the NYF expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its current challenges through resilience. They concluded by commending President Tinubu's courage and vision, calling on all Nigerians to support the ongoing reforms, engage in constructive dialogue, and work collectively towards a more prosperous nation.
