Security in Benue State was again breached as armed men killed a 50-year-old man in a Saturday morning assault on a local community. The incident has prompted a swift military response as authorities work to apprehend the perpetrators.
Details of the Gbajimba Village Attack
The violent event unfolded in Gbajimba village, located in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. According to security sources, the assailants stormed the community at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Their target was Alhaji Sadauna, aged 50, whom they attacked before fleeing the area.
Reports indicate that the gunmen carried out the killing and escaped before security forces could intervene at the scene. The attack has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.
Military Response and Pursuit Operation
Upon receiving the distress report, troops from Sector 1 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), who are stationed in Gbajimba, immediately mobilised to the scene. Their rapid deployment underscores the presence of joint security forces in the area tasked with maintaining peace.
Unfortunately, when the soldiers arrived, they discovered that Alhaji Sadauna had already been killed by the attackers. A security source revealed, “The troops swiftly pursued the fleeing gunmen along their suspected escape routes, but no contact was made.” This suggests the assailants had a significant head start and knowledge of the terrain.
Aftermath and Ongoing Investigation
Following the failed pursuit, the military personnel secured the area to prevent further violence. The body of the deceased was later evacuated from the scene. In line with procedural protocols, the remains were handed over to personnel of the Nigeria Police at the Gbajimba Police Division.
Authorities have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend those responsible for the killing. The incident adds to a series of security concerns in Benue State and raises questions about the effectiveness of current security strategies in vulnerable rural communities.
The local community remains on edge as the manhunt continues, hoping for the swift arrest of the culprits to serve as a deterrent against future attacks.
