Fresh Tragedy in Adamawa: Dozens Feared Dead in Suspected Boko Haram Attack
The Krichinga community in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa state has been struck by another devastating attack, with dozens feared dead and extensive property damage reported. This incident, which occurred on Tuesday, February 24, around 5 p.m., marks the second deadly assault on the community in 2026, heightening tensions and fears among residents.
Chaos and Carnage at Local Market
According to an anonymous source from the community, residents were engaged in their daily activities at a local mini-market when gunshots erupted from multiple directions. Initially mistaken for military personnel due to their attire, the attackers quickly closed in, forcing people to flee for their lives. The aftermath revealed a grim toll: 21 people were reported dead, with 18 bodies recovered so far, while others remain missing, some thrown into bushes and streams. Houses and shops were set ablaze, compounding the destruction.
The source described the scene: "We were sitting yesterday doing our normal daily routine, people were trading at the mini market when we heard gunshots from different angles around 5 pm. We all thought they were military personnel because they dressed like them, but unfortunately, the gunshots grew louder and closer to us. We started running to hide for our lives."
Families Flee Amid Grief and Trauma
Many families have fled Krichinga to protect themselves, expressing profound grief and an inability to cope with the recurring violence. The attack has disproportionately affected young men, leaving older residents vulnerable and without support. Tragically, the newly appointed community head was also among the victims. Residents are grappling with trauma and unanswered questions about the persistent attacks.
"We have asked several questions, yet we haven't gotten an answer. We are caged, held captives by terrorists who murder us like animals, and no one is saying anything about it," the source lamented. While security forces arrived after the attack to calm the situation, doubts remain about their ability to prevent future incidents.
Broader Security Challenges in Adamawa
Adamawa state continues to face severe security challenges, with multiple communities reporting recurring violence in recent months. This latest attack underscores the ongoing threat posed by groups like Boko Haram, exacerbating displacement and humanitarian crises. Residents are calling for urgent assistance to safeguard families and the wider Madagali area from further tragedies.
The incident follows other violent episodes in the region, including the brutal killing of former councilor Hon. David Dahbille Ndevino in Demsa LGA earlier in February 2026, highlighting a pattern of insecurity that demands immediate attention.
