At least 20 people have been killed in a brutal attack by suspected bandits on the Fesken Rafi community in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The assault, which occurred earlier this week, has plunged the community into mourning as families search for missing loved ones and residents grapple with the scale of the violence.
Government Response and Condolences
Local authorities confirmed the death toll during official engagements following the attack, as concerns mount over persistent insecurity in the region. The Kebbi State Government expressed deep sorrow over the killings and extended condolences to the affected families and the entire community.
On Saturday, Deputy Governor Umar Tafida led a government delegation to Fesken Rafi for a condolence visit. He assured residents that efforts to address security challenges are being intensified. Tafida reiterated the government's commitment to protecting lives and property, announcing additional security deployments and operational support to improve response in vulnerable communities.
“We share in your grief and remain committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property across Kebbi State,” he stated during the visit.
Local Officials Confirm Incident
Officials from the local government, including Arewa Local Government Area Chairman Sani Tela and State House of Assembly member representing Arewa Constituency, Nuradeen Kangiwa, also confirmed the incident and the casualty figure. They commended the state government's response while calling for sustained security interventions in the area.
Traditional leaders who accompanied the delegation, including representatives of the Emir of Argungu and the District Head of Bui, urged authorities to improve road access to the community. They emphasized that poor accessibility has hindered rapid response during security emergencies and also impacts economic activity.
Authorities have stated that security operations in the area are expected to be strengthened in the coming days as part of ongoing efforts to restore calm.
