Gunmen believed to be members of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, on the morning of June 29, 2026. The assailants killed a teacher and abducted an unspecified number of students who were sitting for the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.
Attack Details
According to reports, the attackers stormed the school at approximately 9 a.m., firing sporadically into the air and causing widespread panic among students, teachers, and local residents. In the chaos, they killed a teacher and then forcibly took an unknown number of examination candidates to an undisclosed location.
Police Confirmation
Confirming the incident to journalists, the spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nahum Daso, stated that some students remain unaccounted for. “At about 9 a.m., an unspecified number of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists attacked a secondary school and shot sporadically into the air. During the attack, an unspecified number of students were abducted, while some are still missing,” Daso said.
Previous Abduction Incident
This attack comes just 47 days after a similar incident in the same local government area. On May 15, 2026, terrorists abducted 42 pupils, some as young as two years old, from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira/Uba. As of the date of this latest attack, those pupils have not yet been released.
