Herdsmen Kill Father, Son in Benue Community Attack

In a renewed wave of violence, suspected herdsmen militia have struck a Benue State community, claiming the lives of a father and his son. The tragic incident has further heightened fears in the already troubled region.

Details of the Deadly Assault

The attack occurred on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, across several settlements including Imande Avur, Abande, Mbaikyor, and Turan, all within the Kwande Local Government Area. According to a message from a former councillor, Mr. Akerigba Lawrence, the victims were identified as Elder Abur Alam and his son, Ikyaa Bashi.

Mr. Akerigba, who disclosed the information to newsmen in Makurdi on Thursday, January 15, 2026, stated that the duo were peaceful farmers who were killed simply while trying to earn their livelihood. He explicitly labeled the perpetrators as "Fulani insurgents".

Community in Fear and Desperation

The immediate aftermath of the attack has been devastating for the local population. Several residents have been displaced from their homes, while those who remain are living in profound terror. Akerigba expressed grave concern over the frequency of these assaults, noting that attacks have become a daily occurrence for the past two weeks.

He lamented the dire security situation, pointing to the absence of timely intervention by security agencies as a key factor worsening the crisis. Furthermore, he highlighted that affected families have received no meaningful support from authorities.

A Call for Urgent Government Action

In a passionate plea, the former councillor issued a stark warning, stating that if the attacks are allowed to continue unchecked, the consequences would be devastating for the community. He accused the government of having forgotten the people of Turan and its environs.

"This is a wake-up call. The people of Turan can no longer endure this bloodshed," Akerigba declared. "Immediate action is required to stop these attacks, protect lives, and ensure justice. Enough is enough." His statement underscores a growing sentiment of abandonment and a desperate cry for help from a region caught in a relentless cycle of violence.
