Gunmen Kill Plateau University Student in Ambush Attack
In a tragic incident on Monday night, gunmen ambushed and killed a 300-level university student in Dum Village, Bachi District of Riyom Local Council, Plateau State. The attackers positioned themselves at the village entrance and opened fire on two young men from the community, resulting in the death of one while the other managed to escape unharmed.
Victim Identified as Only Child of His Mother
The victim has been identified as Badung Sunday Alamba, a 29-year-old student at the Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State. A community member, Mr. Dung Elisha, described the attack as heartbreaking, noting that Alamba was the only child of his mother. His companion, Dachomo Habila, narrowly escaped despite attempts by the gunmen to kill him.
Community Leader Condemns Attack as Barbaric
Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), confirmed the incident and condemned it as a premeditated, calculated, and barbaric assault on innocent civilians. He stated that the attackers deliberately targeted Berom communities in Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Jos South Local Councils.
Tengwong called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the killing, urging security agencies to track down the perpetrators and their sponsors and bring them to justice without delay. He also urged security operatives to enhance surveillance and protection around vulnerable communities that have been repeatedly attacked.
Efforts to contact the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
Plateau Government Adjusts Curfew Hours in Jos North
Meanwhile, the Plateau State government, in consultation with security agencies, has further relaxed the curfew hours previously imposed on Jos North Local Council. This decision is due to the relative peace in the area following the attacks at Angwan Rukuba.
The curfew in Jos North will now be in effect from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, starting from Wednesday, April 8, 2026. Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has directed all security agencies to strictly enforce the curfew to ensure the protection of lives and property and to restore calm in the affected areas.
He advised citizens to carry out their lawful duties within the relaxed hours not affected by the curfew and to observe the enforced curfew period from dusk to dawn.
Muslim Group Urges Calm Over Arrests
In a related development, the Jos Muslim Ummah Committee for Peace, Security & Stability (JOMUPSEC) has urged Muslims to refrain from protesting over the arrest of three Muslims. The group informed the Muslim Ummah in Jos North, Plateau State, and across Nigeria that the three individuals who were previously arrested have been released with the approval of Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
The individuals are Jibrin Ismail, a resident of Congo/Bulbula; Abduljalil Aminu Maidoki, a resident of Rikkos; and Ahmad Abdulhadi, a resident of Rikkos.
Chairman of JOMUPSEC, Sani Mu'azu, and the Secretary, Peace Ambassador Sani Suleiman, appealed to all youth and Ummah members to avoid protests, unrest, or actions that could cause tension or chaos. They emphasised the importance of remaining calm, law-abiding, and allowing due process and dialogue to prevail for the sake of peace and stability. The statement also expressed gratitude to the efforts and support of various individuals for their commitment to peace.
