Police Foil Terrorist Attack in Oyo, Two Suspected Bandits Killed in Gun Battle

The Oyo State Police Command has successfully thwarted what it described as a planned deadly terrorist attack on Elebe Village, Aleniboro, via Irawo Mine, resulting in the death of two suspected armed bandits during an intelligence-led security operation. This decisive action underscores the ongoing efforts to combat criminality in the region.

Intelligence Tip-Off Leads to Swift Police Response

The breakthrough came following a crucial tip-off from a vigilant resident who reported that approximately ten armed men had concealed themselves at a farm settlement in Elebe Village. According to police sources, these individuals were allegedly planning to launch a night-time attack on the community, posing a significant threat to local safety.

The suspects were reportedly armed with a dangerous arsenal, including AK-47 rifles, single-barrel guns, and locally made pistols. Upon receiving this intelligence, the Divisional Police Officer of Tede Division immediately alerted the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, who ordered the rapid deployment of additional personnel to the area.

Joint Security Operation and Intense Gun Battle

Officers from the police force, working in close collaboration with members of the Agbekoya group and local hunters, swiftly moved to the identified location to confront the suspects. As the security team advanced, the armed men opened fire, triggering a fierce gun battle that lasted for some time.

During the exchange of fire, two of the suspected bandits were shot dead by security forces. The remaining suspects reportedly fled the scene, with some believed to have sustained gunshot wounds. The police have since secured the area and initiated ongoing surveillance and bush-combing operations aimed at apprehending the fleeing individuals and preventing any further threats to the community.

Recovery of Weapons and Evidence from the Scene

Following the confrontation, a thorough search of the area was conducted by officers, leading to the recovery of several items. These include a locally made pistol, empty and live cartridges, expended 7.62mm AK-47 shells, substances suspected to be Indian hemp, two mobile phones, and a bottle containing a suspected mixed drink. These findings are expected to aid in further investigations into the activities of the group.

Police Appeal for Public Cooperation and Vigilance

In a statement, the Oyo State Police Command emphasized the critical role of community support in the fight against criminality. The Command further solicits sustained cooperation and timely intelligence from members of the public, emphasizing that community support remains a critical pillar in the ongoing fight against criminality, the police said.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies promptly. This can be done through the Oyo State emergency numbers, ensuring a swift response to potential threats. The successful operation highlights the importance of proactive measures and public involvement in maintaining security across the state.
