Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, has officially launched the Iru Ekun security network to address escalating insecurity in southwestern Nigeria. The Yoruba Nation activist announced the initiative as a voluntary, free community-based effort to protect residents from bandits, kidnappers, and insurgents.
Igboho Unveils New Security Outfit
Speaking at the launch in Ibadan, Oyo State, Igboho stated that he consulted President Bola Tinubu before the unveiling and received the president's approval. He emphasized that the Iru Ekun network is non-profit and relies on volunteer participation. The activist warned criminal elements to leave the southwest or face severe consequences.
The new security outfit's uniform and tactical gear were showcased in a video shared on social media, drawing significant attention. Igboho noted that forest reserves in the region have become hideouts for terrorists and criminal gangs, necessitating a robust local response.
Public Reactions to Iru Ekun Launch
Social media users expressed mixed reactions to the launch. Some questioned the need for a new group given the existing Amotekun Corps, officially the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN). Others raised concerns about the legality and coordination with federal security agencies.
- @Kingdare210 commented: "While pump action, when the terrorist are using more suffocated guns. They should be licensed to carry AK-47."
- @_chiefagbabiaka wrote: "E be like say I go join ooo."
- @Aji_ben72 queried: "What happened to Amotekun?"
- @Emmyhimself asked: "Have they gotten permission from ONSA? This material choke market sha."
Nigeria's Lingering Insecurity Crisis
Nigeria continues to face severe security challenges from bandits, Boko Haram, and other insurgent groups. Recent attacks have highlighted the persistent threat. On May 15, gunmen attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, killing two people and abducting 45 schoolchildren, a principal, and teachers. One teacher was later killed in captivity.
On May 23, bandits raided a prayer ground in Kwara State, killing three worshippers and abducting 15 others. In a separate incident on May 25, suspected bandits attacked Yashikira community in Baruten LGA, setting the emir's palace ablaze and abducting residents, including women and children. Security forces have launched rescue operations.
President Tinubu's Response
President Bola Tinubu has pledged decisive action to curb insecurity, facing mounting criticism from opponents. The government continues to deploy security forces to affected areas, but attacks persist.
Igboho's Previous Activism
Earlier, Igboho submitted a petition to UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, advocating for the creation of a Yoruba Nation. He presented the petition on behalf of Professor Adebanji Akintoye, leader of the Yoruba Nation movement. The activist remains a polarizing figure, with supporters praising his efforts and critics questioning his methods.
