Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) successfully repelled a night attack by ISWAP terrorists on Forward Operating Base Mairari in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. The assault began at about 11:25 p.m., and the troops responded with exceptional gallantry, engaging the attackers in a fierce firefight that forced the terrorists to withdraw in confusion.
Heavy Casualties Inflicted on Terrorists
According to Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer for Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai, the troops inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists and destroyed their equipment. Items recovered include AK-47 rifles, magazines loaded with ammunition, and Rocket Propelled Gun tubes. Surveillance footage confirmed the evacuation of several dead and wounded terrorists from the battlefield.
Loss of Three Gallant Fighters
Regrettably, two soldiers and one member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives during the intense encounter. The Theatre Command mourned these gallant heroes and extended heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones. Additionally, some equipment was damaged by Rocket Propelled Gun fire during the battle.
Resettlement Community Spared
The Mairari community had only recently been resettled, with over 950 households returning to the area. The attack was a desperate attempt by the terrorists to instill fear and disrupt the ongoing resettlement process. However, their objective was thwarted, as no civilian casualties were recorded in the community during the attack.
Reinforcement Team Detonates IEDs
In a related development, a reinforcement team from Monguno successfully detected and safely detonated two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) emplaced along the route before engaging the fleeing terrorists. The swift intervention further disrupted the insurgents' withdrawal and inflicted additional casualties on them.
