Zamfara Bandit Attacks: Over 21 Villagers Killed, 11 Bandits Neutralized in Separate Incidents
In a devastating series of attacks, gunmen have unleashed terror across Zamfara State, resulting in significant casualties and abductions. According to reports gathered by The Guardian, over 21 villagers were killed and scores were abducted in a brutal assault on a Zamfara community. The assailants, described as bandits, stormed the village with more than 80 motorcycles, firing sporadically at women and stealing livestock during the chaotic incident.
Details of the Initial Attack
A resident, who requested anonymity for safety reasons, revealed that the attack occurred on Friday around 9:00 p.m. The local community is currently engaged in searching for missing persons and making funeral arrangements for the deceased. The resident urgently called on both the federal and state governments to deploy security personnel to the area to restore peace and prevent further violence.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Zamfara State Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the incident. He noted that the exact number of deaths remains unspecified at this time. DSP Abubakar assured that the command has deployed adequate personnel to the affected area and that normalcy has been restored. He emphasized the importance of community cooperation, urging residents to provide accurate information on bandit movements to enable prompt police responses.
Separate Attack in Bungudu Local Council
In a related and equally tragic incident, suspected armed bandits killed five individuals, including two police officers and three civilians, during an attack on Yarkatsinan Laka Community in Bungudu Local Council of Zamfara State. According to a statement issued by police spokesman DSP Abubakar, the bandits invaded the community riding on over 50 motorcycles and armed with sophisticated weapons.
The Police Strike Unit responded swiftly, engaging the assailants in a fierce gun duel. This confrontation resulted in the neutralization of 11 bandits, while several others managed to escape with gunshot injuries. Unfortunately, during the exchange, two police personnel and three civilians lost their lives. DSP Abubakar confirmed that normalcy has since been restored in the area following the incident.
Police Response and Condolences
In response to these attacks, the Commissioner of Police for Zamfara State, Ahmad Muhammad Bello, paid a condolence visit to commiserate with the families of the deceased and the entire affected community.
