Gunfire Erupts in Ikoyi-Ile as Ogbomoso Monarch Postpones Town Hall After Clash

Tension has gripped Ikoyi-Ile, an ancient town in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, after several residents were shot during a violent clash linked to a planned visit by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogee III. The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, as opposition to a proposed town hall meeting by the monarch escalated into armed confrontation.

Community Opposition and Protocol Dispute

Prior to the violence, community groups in Ikoyi-Ile had expressed strong dissatisfaction with the monarch's planned engagement. Residents argued that protocol requires a host community's traditional ruler to formally invite and receive visiting monarchs. However, the historically prestigious Onikoyi-Ile stool remains vacant following the demise of the former king, Oba Yekini Oladipupo.

In a series of open letters issued by different indigene groups, residents maintained that any visit without proper invitation amounted to a blatant overreach. These letters were reportedly sent to the Oyo State Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, and the office of Governor Seyi Makinde.

Violent Confrontation and Injuries

Despite these warnings, tensions escalated dramatically in the town, culminating in gunfire that left multiple residents injured. Speaking to journalists, a youth leader named Raheem Hameed alleged that those involved in the shooting were linked to the monarch's camp.

"There is no doubt that the gun-wielding invaders were either actors of the Ogbomoso king or his loyalists in traditional council," Hameed claimed. "About 20 of our men were shot at, a few were badly wounded and some others were moderately injured. We were practically removing bullets with hands from people's bodies."

Videos circulating on social media appear to show injured individuals, with some bleeding heavily as others attempted to provide assistance. The chaotic scenes depicted residents scrambling for safety while trying to help the wounded.

Monarch's Response and Postponement

In response to the violent backlash, Oba Ghandi announced that the planned town hall meeting would no longer proceed as scheduled. The monarch explained that this decision followed advice from security agencies concerned about a possible breakdown of law and order.

The Soun of Ogbomoso emphasized that his postponement should not be interpreted as a cowardly retreat. He maintained that his intentions were focused entirely on community development and expressed surprise at the hostile reaction from Ikoyi-Ile residents. The monarch indicated that the engagement could potentially be rescheduled at a later, more appropriate date.

Security Situation and Official Response

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the reported shooting incident. It remains unclear whether any arrests have been made in connection with the violence or if investigations are currently underway.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions surrounding traditional leadership protocols in Yorubaland, particularly when communities face leadership vacuums. The absence of the Onikoyi-Ile has created a power dynamic that appears to have contributed significantly to the current crisis.

This incident follows another security concern in the same local government area, where five operatives of the National Park Service stationed in Oloka were reportedly killed by gunmen late Tuesday night. Some officers were shot while others were burned to death before the assailants fled into the forest with their weapons.

The convergence of these security challenges in Oriire Local Government Area raises questions about the broader safety situation in this part of Oyo State. Community leaders are calling for increased security presence and clearer protocols for inter-community engagements involving traditional rulers.
