15 Traders Arrested for Environmental Offences on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

In a significant crackdown on environmental violations, operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested no fewer than 15 traders for allegedly flouting environmental regulations along the Abekoko and Old Bank axes of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. The arrests were made during a targeted operation aimed at curbing traffic congestion and maintaining public order in the state.

Operation No Traffic Gridlock Leads to Multiple Arrests

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta, detailing that the traders were apprehended as part of Operation "No Traffic Gridlock." This initiative was launched to ensure the free flow of traffic and uphold environmental standards across Ogun State. Babaseyi emphasized that the arrested individuals will be charged to court upon the completion of ongoing investigations.

During the operation, law enforcement officers demolished numerous planks, shanties, and wares that were obstructing the highway, and removed six trucks from the road. Babaseyi stated, "The exercise targeted traders' illegal display of goods and makeshift structures, which obstructed traffic and violated environmental laws. Fifteen individuals who defied lawful directives and violated environmental regulations were arrested and will be charged to court appropriately upon completion of investigation."

Police Commissioner Commends Officers and Issues Warning

Commissioner of Police (CP), Bode Ojajuni, praised the officers involved for their professionalism and reaffirmed the command's commitment to enforcing traffic and environmental regulations. He issued a stern warning to the public, cautioning that anyone found blocking roads will face legal consequences. Ojajuni urged traders, drivers, and other members of the public to adhere to the rules for safety and orderliness.

The illegal activities along the expressway had been causing significant traffic gridlock and environmental infections, prompting the police action. This move underscores the state's efforts to combat urban clutter and enhance road safety in key transportation corridors.
