The Oyo State Police Command has made a startling arrest, taking into custody three underage girls for allegedly issuing a kidnapping threat and demanding a hefty ransom. The suspects, identified as Nurudeen Fathia, 17; Fatai Taiwo, 17; and Munirat Saliu, 16, were apprehended after a swift police investigation.
How the Alleged Kidnap Threat Unfolded
The incident began on Friday, January 9, 2026, when a woman named Islamiat Omowumi, a resident of Ikoyi-Ile, reported to the police. She stated that she had received a terrifying phone call from a private number. The caller allegedly threatened to abduct her and made a series of shocking demands.
According to the police report, the caller not only demanded a ransom of Ten Million Naira (N10,000,000) but also asked for human parts. The threat specifically targeted Omowumi because of her profession as a meat seller. The caller warned of severe consequences if their demands were not met, plunging the complainant into fear.
Swift Police Action and Arrest
Confirming the incident, the Command's spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police Olayinka Ayanlade, detailed the police response. He stated that detectives immediately launched an intelligence-led operation following Omowumi's complaint.
"The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public of the successful arrest of suspected kidnappers following a threat report," Ayanlade said. "This demonstrates our commitment to proactive, intelligence-led, and preventive policing."
The police investigation quickly led to the location and arrest of the three teenage suspects. A key piece of evidence, a small Itel mobile phone allegedly used to make the threatening call, was recovered from them.
Suspects Claim It Was a Prank
During interrogation, the narrative took an unexpected turn. The three arrested girls confessed to making the call but claimed their actions were not serious. They alleged that the entire kidnap threat was intended merely as a prank.
Despite this claim, the police are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. DSP Ayanlade emphasized that the suspects remain in custody while investigations continue to fully unravel the circumstances. The police aim to determine the appropriate legal action in accordance with the law.
The police spokesperson issued a stern warning to the public, especially youths, against engaging in acts capable of causing fear, panic, or threat to life. He stressed that such actions constitute serious criminal offences with severe legal consequences.
Police Reaffirm Commitment to Safety
DSP Ayanlade reiterated the command's unwavering dedication to protecting residents of Oyo State. "The Oyo State Police Command reassures the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property," he stated.
He encouraged residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. This case, according to the police, underscores their resolve to ensure a safe and secure environment for all through proactive intervention.
