Anthony Joshua's Driver Arraigned Over Fatal Crash

A driver involved in the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been formally charged in court. The case, which has drawn significant public attention, marks a pivotal step in the legal proceedings following the fatal crash on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Driver Formally Charged in Sagamu Court

Kayode Adeniyi, the 47-year-old driver of the Lexus SUV, was arraigned before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday, January 2, 2026. He faces serious charges including manslaughter and reckless driving in connection with the collision that occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025.

The Ogun State Police Command, through its spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the development. The court has now adjourned the case to January 20, 2026 to allow for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the devastating incident.

Details of the Fatal Collision Emerge

Investigations by authorities have painted a clearer picture of the events leading to the crash. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the primary causes were overspeeding and wrongful overtaking.

The Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, was carrying Anthony Joshua and two of his training staff, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele. Reports indicate that near Danco, a tyre burst occurred while the vehicle was allegedly traveling well above the 65mph speed limit. The driver reportedly lost control during an overtaking maneuver, leading to a collision with a stationary truck loaded with soya beans.

Tragically, the crash resulted in the deaths of Joshua's friends, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, sending the boxing world into mourning.

A Notorious Highway and Ongoing Scrutiny

The accident has once again spotlighted the dangers of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Nigeria's busiest highway. This critical transport corridor, linking the commercial capital to other regions, is notorious for fatal accidents often attributed to speeding, poor road conditions, and illegally parked vehicles.

As the legal process unfolds, the public and media await the next hearing. The adjournment to January 20, 2026, allows police and road safety officials to complete a thorough investigation, which will be crucial for the court's proceedings.

The case continues to resonate deeply, highlighting enduring concerns about road safety and the profound personal loss stemming from such preventable tragedies.
