Nigerian Army Investigates Child Abuse Allegations at Kontagora Cantonment

The Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC) has officially initiated a thorough investigation into a distressing case of alleged child abuse that was reported on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, within the Kontagora Military Cantonment located in Niger State. This development was confirmed in a detailed statement released on Thursday, March 5, by Major Godfrey Anebi Abakpa, who serves as the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the Nigerian Army Training Centre.

Discovery of the Incident

According to the statement, the alarming situation came to light when a soldier residing in the neighbouring area reportedly heard the desperate cries of a child coming from an adjacent apartment. Acting swiftly, the soldier gained access to the residence, where he allegedly found a 7-year-old girl being subjected to physical assault by two sisters who are identified as relatives and the current custodians of the child.

Preliminary Findings and Allegations

Initial investigations suggest that the child was allegedly punished due to concerns about her earlier whereabouts. Furthermore, additional information points to possible neglect, including the denial of meals and restriction from using basic household facilities. Eyewitness accounts have also raised concerns that similar incidents may have occurred in the past, despite previous cautions being issued.

It was further gathered that the child had been living with her uncle’s family within the cantonment following the demise of her father. She was reportedly brought to the barracks to receive proper care and continue her education, making the allegations even more troubling.

Immediate Actions Taken

Upon receiving the report, the Commander of NATRAC, Major General AGL Haruna, immediately directed the NATRAC Military Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident. In a prompt response, the child was evacuated to the Kontagora Military Cantonment Medical Centre for a thorough medical evaluation and is currently reported to be in stable condition.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, temporary custody of the child has been entrusted to a family within the cantonment who voluntarily offered to provide care and support, ensuring her safety and well-being during this period.

Commitment to Welfare and Protection

The NATRAC authority has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the welfare and protection of children and dependants of personnel who continue to serve in defence of the nation. In the statement, the public is assured that appropriate and stringent action will be taken in accordance with extant regulations upon the conclusion of the investigation, highlighting the seriousness with which the Nigerian Army is treating this matter.

This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability within military communities, as efforts are made to ensure the safety and rights of all individuals, especially vulnerable children.
