A Bishop from a well-known church in Lusaka's John Laing area, Zambia, has initiated legal proceedings against his own wife following a violent domestic incident. The clergyman accuses his spouse of a brutal physical assault that involved a knife and a shocking act of violence against his manhood.
Court Appearance and Charges
Bishop Maxwell Mwanza, aged 39, has formally charged his 32-year-old wife, Cynthia Bwalya, with unlawful wounding. The alleged assault took place on November 17, 2025. When the case was presented before Lusaka magistrate Kawama Mwamfuli, the accused, Cynthia Bwalya, maintained a calm demeanor and entered a plea of not guilty to the charge against her. The court has since adjourned the matter until January 22, 2026, for further proceedings.
The Night of the Violent Altercation
According to the police report filed by Bishop Mwanza, the conflict began with a disagreement between the couple. Later that same night, as they were in bed, the situation escalated dramatically. Around 02:00 hours, Cynthia reportedly began a phone conversation with an unidentified man. Maxwell overheard his wife asking the man to escort her to a place called Nalusanga to collect some cattle.
Enraged by this, the Bishop confronted his wife, seizing the mobile phone from her. He questioned her decision to phone another man, especially in his presence and within their marital home. In response, Cynthia allegedly retorted, calling her husband "very foolish" and threatening, "let me show you."
Escalation to a Knife Attack
The argument quickly turned physical. Cynthia is said to have first picked up a broomstick and attempted to strike her husband, but he managed to block the blow. She then procured the keys to their locked bedroom, opened the door, and left the room. She returned moments later armed with a knife, locked the door behind her, and proceeded to attack Maxwell.
The victim told police he was stabbed in the hands and the head. When he tried to escape the vicious assault, his wife struck him in the back. In a final, degrading act, she pulled his genitals before he could finally flee. Maxwell managed to grab the keys to the door, which had fallen from her hands during the struggle.
After freeing himself, the Bishop locked his wife inside the bedroom and immediately went to report the violent incident to the police, setting the stage for the current court case that has captured public attention.
