Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex Targeted in Early Morning Bomb Explosion
A suspected Improvised Explosive Device was detonated at the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa, causing significant alarm but resulting in no casualties or property destruction. The explosion occurred at approximately 6:00 am on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, sending shockwaves through the government premises.
Police Response and Swift Containment of the Situation
The Bayelsa State Police Command, through its spokesperson DSP Musa Muhammed, officially confirmed the incident in a detailed statement. Commissioner of Police CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor personally led a comprehensive response team to the scene immediately after the explosion was reported.

Upon arrival, EOD operatives successfully contained the explosion and conducted a thorough search of the area. During this operation, they identified one unexploded IED which was promptly rendered safe by the specialists. The entire vicinity was cordoned off as a security precaution.
Suspect Apprehended and Ongoing Investigation
Law enforcement officials arrested Pentecost Elijah, a 60-year-old male from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, at the scene in direct connection with the explosion incident.
The suspect is currently undergoing intensive interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department. Police authorities have confirmed that upon conclusion of the investigation, the suspect will be formally charged to court to face legal proceedings.
Government Precautionary Measures and Public Assurance
In response to the security incident, the Bayelsa State Government implemented immediate safety measures. Head of Service Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer issued a directive ordering a temporary four-hour closure of work at the secretariat as a precautionary step.
Security operatives, including anti-bomb squad personnel, cordoned off access roads leading to both the State Secretariat and the Bayelsa State Government House while investigations and safety procedures were actively ongoing.
