The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has sentenced a businessman, Kingsley Obasi, to seven years in prison for fraud involving $247,390. Obasi, along with his company Great King Parkson Industrial Company, was arraigned on February 22, 2023, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 on a single charge of stealing, under Section 287(9)(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Court Proceedings and Verdict
Justice Mojisola Dada delivered the judgment on Thursday, as announced by the EFCC via its X (formerly Twitter) handle. The conviction followed a thorough examination of evidence presented by the prosecution, which proved that Obasi diverted funds meant for business transactions into personal accounts.
Details of the Fraud
Investigations revealed that Obasi obtained $247,390 from a victim under the pretext of supplying industrial materials. Instead of fulfilling the contract, he converted the money for personal use, leading to the criminal charges. The court found him guilty and imposed the maximum sentence to serve as a deterrent.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to fighting financial crimes and ensuring that perpetrators face justice. The agency urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
