A suspected chemical odour at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Epe Garage in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, caused widespread panic and led to the hospitalization of approximately 30 students and one teacher yesterday. According to the Vice Principal, Mrs Adeola Borogun, the situation was not a gas explosion but rather a strange chemical odour detected on the school premises. She explained that many students began vomiting and fainting immediately after exposure, forcing the school management to call for ambulances from the General Hospital in Ijebu Ode. The swift action was crucial in managing the crisis, she noted.
Dr Banjo Adeoye, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, confirmed that 30 students and a teacher were brought in for treatment. He stated that most of the affected individuals were in stable condition, although the exact chemical substance responsible for the incident has not yet been identified. Authorities are working diligently to determine the source to prevent future occurrences.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ogun State Ministry of Environment, Dr (Mrs) Kafayat Lawal, disclosed that officials responded swiftly after receiving a distress call.
