The Anambra State High Court, sitting in Awka and presided over by Justice Jude Obiora, has ordered the remand of Nnewi-based native doctor Ikechukwu Ezenagu, also known as Muomiri Afuluanya, at the Amawbia Correctional Centre. Ezenagu was brought to the court directly from the hospital for his arraignment.
Bail Application Denied
During the proceedings, Ezenagu's counsel, Barrister Kingsley Awuka, made an application for bail on health grounds and requested that his client be allowed to remain in the hospital until the next adjourned date. However, the prosecuting counsel, Barrister Tobechukwu Nweke, strongly opposed the bail application and urged the court to remand the defendant pending the determination of the formal bail motion.
Court Ruling
In his ruling, Justice Obiora emphasized that a hospital is not a constitutional facility for the detention of a defendant. Consequently, he ordered that Ezenagu be remanded at the Amawbia Correctional Centre. The matter has been adjourned to June 19, 2026, for further hearing.
Background of Arrest
Ezenagu was arrested on March 26 by operatives of the Anambra State Government's security outfit, Agunechemba, over allegations of violating the state's Homeland Security Law. The arrest and subsequent court action highlight the state's commitment to enforcing its security regulations.
