Anambra Police Uncover Eight-Month-Old Murder Case, Arrest Suspect
Operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka, Anambra State, have made a significant breakthrough in a long-standing missing person case. The police have arrested a 35-year-old suspect, Chukwudalu Ezeani, in connection with the alleged murder of his 52-year-old cousin, Chinedu Ezeani. This arrest comes after an intensive eight-month investigation into the victim's disappearance, which has now been reclassified as a homicide.
Details of the Crime and Investigation
Preliminary investigations conducted by the police reveal a chilling sequence of events. According to authorities, on August 1, 2025, at approximately 8:00 PM, the suspect allegedly killed the deceased at his residence in Afube Village, Amichi. Following the murder, Chukwudalu Ezeani reportedly buried the body in a shallow grave within his own compound, effectively concealing the crime for nearly eight months.
The case was initially reported as a missing person incident at the Amichi Police Station. However, detectives later revisited the investigation after receiving credible intelligence, which ultimately led to the arrest of the suspect. This proactive approach by law enforcement highlights their commitment to resolving cold cases and ensuring justice for victims.
Confession and Exhumation of the Body
Confirming the arrest to newsmen, the command's spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, provided further details. Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and cooperated with operatives by leading them to the burial site within his compound. There, the police exhumed the corpse, bringing a grim end to the eight-month mystery surrounding Chinedu Ezeani's disappearance.
SP Ikenga mentioned that the remains have been deposited for necessary forensic examination to gather additional evidence and confirm the circumstances of death. This step is crucial for building a strong case against the suspect and ensuring a thorough legal process.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
The suspect is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations. The police are working diligently to finalize their inquiries, which may include further forensic analysis and witness statements. This case underscores the importance of persistent investigative efforts in solving crimes, even when initial reports suggest less sinister explanations.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help prevent such tragedies in the future. The arrest serves as a reminder of the dedication of Anambra State police in upholding law and order and bringing perpetrators to justice.
