Nigerian celebrity businessman and politician Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, has strongly condemned the killing of a young man by police officers in Effurun, Delta State. He has called for severe punishment for the officers involved.
Background of the Incident
The incident occurred in the Effurun area of Delta State, where a suspect was shot multiple times by an officer identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, despite pleading for mercy. A viral video shared by activist Harrison Gwamnishu on April 28 sparked widespread outrage.
The Delta State Police Command later issued a statement confirming the arrest of the officer and assuring the public that justice would be served.
Cubana Chief Priest's Reaction
Reacting to a reshared video by Israel DMW, an aide to Afrobeats star Davido, Cubana Chief Priest expressed extreme anger on his Instagram story. He insisted on a life-for-life penalty for the officer who shot the young man.
“The guy did everything possible to stop him. It was not this young man's time, and this fool took his life. Omo, na life for life oh. This is heartbreaking. He has to join the guy ASAP,” he wrote.
He also demanded that the officer who supplied bullets and those who cheered the shooter face justice. “The guy who gave him the bullet when the gun was not working, and the guys that were hailing him, all of them should go down. They killed him comfortably and happily,” he added.
Public Reactions
Nigerians on social media supported Cubana Chief Priest's call for justice. Comments included calls for blood for blood and a collective effort to seek justice regardless of political affiliations.
One user wrote: “A son for a son. A brother for a brother. A sister for a sister. In summary, blood for blood.” Another commented: “Leave the messenger and focus on the message. Justice must be served.”
Context of the Incident
The victim was reportedly a suspect in a case, but the officers did not conduct a proper investigation before using lethal force. The police have linked the shooting to spiritual reasons, which has drawn further criticism.
Cubana Chief Priest, who recently entered politics, has been vocal about justice and accountability. He announced his intention to represent the Orsu, Orlu, and Oru East Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress, focusing on constituency development.
