Activist Harrison Gwamnishu Accuses Delta Police of Using POS Operator for Extortion
Prominent activist Harrison Gwamnishu has publicly called out officers of the Delta State Police Command, specifically targeting the C Division, for allegedly stationing a resident Point of Sale (POS) operator within their premises to facilitate extortion from innocent residents. Gwamnishu shared a video that purportedly shows the moment police officers invited the POS operator into the station, sparking widespread outrage and demands for accountability.
Details of the Alleged Extortion Incident
According to Harrison Gwamnishu, the incident involved a man identified as Ugochukwu, who was arrested by police officers while on his way to the airport. The activist claimed that Ugochukwu was held for several hours before being released only after an alleged extortion of N50,000. The video evidence further reveals that the victim transferred a total of N51,500 to the female POS operator, who was brought into the police office specifically for this transaction.
Gwamnishu emphasized the severe consequences faced by the victim, who was supposed to travel outside the country. Due to the delay caused by the arrest and extortion, Ugochukwu missed his flight entirely. This forced him to incur significant additional expenses, including purchasing a new airline ticket and booking a hotel room, compounding the financial and emotional distress from the alleged police misconduct.
Police Response and Actions Taken
In reaction to the viral video and public outcry, the police complaint unit responded via its official X handle, confirming that the implicated officers have been arrested and detained. The unit stated that these officers are scheduled to appear before the Delta State Commissioner of Police on April 16, 2026, for disciplinary proceedings. This swift action highlights the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the allegations, aiming to restore public trust and ensure justice is served.
The video shared by Harrison Gwamnishu has garnered significant attention on social media platforms, with many users expressing concern over systemic corruption within law enforcement. The incident underscores ongoing issues of police brutality and extortion in Nigeria, prompting calls for more robust oversight and reform in policing practices.
As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders are closely monitoring the outcomes to see if this case will lead to meaningful changes in how police interactions with civilians are conducted, particularly in preventing such exploitative practices in the future.
