Edo Police Deny Endorsing Aide’s Threat and Insult to Obi

The Edo State Police Command has responded to a viral video showing an aide to Governor Monday Okpebholo threatening to hand over members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the police and referring to former presidential candidate Peter Obi as a “stupid man.” The incident occurred in the presence of the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, who was seen smiling in the footage.

Police Statement Clarifies Position

In a statement released on April 24, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, clarified that the commissioner did not endorse, adopt, or align himself with the aide’s remarks. The statement emphasized that the comments made by Emmanuel Eghogho, a known comedian in Benin City, are his personal views and do not reflect those of the police command.

Investigation Underway

The police noted that the remarks are being diligently interrogated for any security implications beyond comedy and showmanship. The command reaffirmed that CP Monday Agbonika remains a non-partisan officer committed to the constitutional mandate of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Edo State Police Command reiterated its earlier call for all political parties, supporters, and the public to conduct their activities peacefully and lawfully. It warned that any act of violence, incitement, or thuggery will not be tolerated, and offenders will be dealt with decisively.

The command remains steadfast in maintaining peace, public safety, and the protection of democratic processes across the state.
