The Edo State Police Command has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a fatal shooting incident near the University of Benin (UNIBEN) campus. The attack occurred on May 10, 2026, at approximately 5:00 PM along the UNIBEN axis in Benin City.
Manhunt for Suspects
Police authorities have launched a manhunt for armed assailants who shot and killed one person and injured several others in a brazen attack near the main gate of UNIBEN. According to preliminary police reports, the incident happened when an unidentified white Mercedes-Benz GLK intercepted another Mercedes-Benz carrying three occupants: Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu. The victims were driving out of the campus gate in Ugbowo when the attackers blocked their vehicle, opened fire, and fled the scene.
Victims and Casualties
The attack also left a female passerby, identified as Dorathy Ubah, with gunshot wounds. All victims were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where Alexander Omogiate was confirmed dead. The other victims are currently receiving medical treatment.
Police Response
Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, condemned the attack and assured that the command will leave no stone unturned in bringing the fleeing perpetrators to justice. He warned criminal elements and hoodlums operating around university campuses to vacate the state, reiterating the police's commitment to fighting crime.
