The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has confirmed that no casualties were recorded following a fire incident that damaged part of a private residential building at Agodongbo Phase 1, Zone 4, Odedare Street, Folatyre area of Oyo town.
The incident, which affected a master bedroom in a four-bedroom flat belonging to Alhaja Abdulkareem, was reported at approximately 2:50 a.m. on Tuesday. According to the Oyo Zonal Command of the agency, firefighters led by FO II Yisau Opeyemi responded promptly to the distress call. Upon arrival, they found the bedroom engulfed in flames.
The fire crew immediately took action and successfully prevented the inferno from spreading to other parts of the building and neighboring properties. The agency attributed the fire outbreak to electrical sparks from a plugged-in appliance, which ignited nearby combustible materials. Officials stated that timely intervention by the firefighters helped minimize damage and avert a major disaster.
Following the operation, fire officers delivered a brief lecture on fire prevention and safety measures to residents in the area. The firefighters returned to the station safely at about 4:55 a.m. and remained on standby for further emergency response.
Speaking on the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to remain conscious of fire safety at all times. He also stressed the importance of installing fire extinguishers in residential and commercial buildings to help control fire outbreaks at an early stage before emergency responders arrive. Akinwande urged the public to ensure proper handling of electrical appliances and avoid leaving devices plugged in unnecessarily to reduce the risk of fire incidents.
