Driver of Emir Sanusi's Wife Remanded Over Alleged N60 Million Jewellery Theft

A Magistrate Court sitting at Nomansland in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State has ordered the remand of a driver and two other individuals over the alleged theft of jewellery, cash, and a mobile phone belonging to the wife of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Defendants Arraigned on Multiple Charges

The defendants, identified as Sulaiman Yakubu Kulkude, Idris Musa, and Abdullahi Usaini, were formally arraigned before the court on a three-count charge. The charges include conspiracy, theft, and receiving stolen property, stemming from the incident that has drawn significant public attention.

Prosecuting counsel, Barrister Abubakar Ibrahim, presented the case to the court, detailing how Sulaiman Yakubu, who serves as the driver for the Emir's wife, allegedly unlawfully entered her room. He is accused of making away with jewellery reportedly valued at an astonishing N60 million, along with an unspecified amount of cash and a mobile phone.

Plea and Bail Proceedings

When the charges were read aloud in court, Sulaiman Yakubu pleaded guilty to all counts, admitting his involvement in the alleged crimes. In contrast, the two other defendants, Idris Musa and Abdullahi Usaini, entered pleas of not guilty, setting the stage for a potentially contentious legal battle.

Counsel for the defendants, Barrister A.A. Abdullahi, promptly filed a bail application on behalf of his clients, seeking their release pending trial. The application argued for their temporary freedom while the case proceeds through the judicial system.

Court's Ruling and Bail Conditions

In his ruling, the presiding Magistrate, Halilu Abdurahman, granted bail to the defendants but imposed stringent conditions to ensure their appearance at future hearings. The bail conditions include the provision of a surety who must be either a father or brother of the defendant, a civil servant not below Grade Level 15, and a bail sum of N10 million for each defendant.

These conditions are designed to secure the defendants' compliance with the court's schedule and mitigate any risk of flight before the case is fully adjudicated.

Case Adjournment and Remand Status

The case has been adjourned to April 14 for further hearing, allowing both the prosecution and defense to prepare their arguments and evidence. However, the defendants were remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of their bail conditions, meaning they will remain detained until the specified sureties and bail amounts are provided and verified by the court.

This development highlights the serious nature of the allegations and the court's commitment to ensuring justice is served in a case involving high-profile individuals and substantial property loss.
