A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to a total of 75 years in prison after convicting him of fraud and money laundering involving ₦33.8 billion. Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment, ruling that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) proved all 12 charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
Details of the Case
The case centered on Mamman's role in diverting and laundering public funds allocated for critical power infrastructure projects, including the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric developments. Prosecutors argued that the funds were systematically moved through various accounts and channels to conceal their origin and intended use.
Court Ruling
Justice Omotosho stated that the prosecution presented credible and consistent evidence establishing guilt on all counts. The court imposed consecutive prison terms on each count, totaling 75 years. The sentence is to take effect from the date of Mamman's arrest, and law enforcement has been directed to take him into custody immediately.
Asset Forfeiture
The court also ordered the forfeiture of assets traced to the proceeds of the crime, as part of efforts to recover public funds siphoned from government projects. This ruling is considered one of the most significant convictions of a former federal minister in recent years, highlighting the judiciary's stance on high-profile corruption cases.
