Kinse Shako Annastasia, a former Catholic reverend sister dismissed from the Congregation of Mother of Perpetual Help of the Archangels Sisters (MOPHAS) in Auchi, Edo State, has publicly recounted a disturbing incident that occurred in 2016 while she was living within the convent walls. According to Annastasia, the incident involved another unnamed reverend sister and left her feeling deeply embarrassed and traumatized.
The Bathroom Incident
In a Facebook post on May 11, Annastasia alleged that while she was bathing in the convent restroom, another sister opened the door and entered without her consent. She described the moment as deeply violating, stating that she felt exposed, embarrassed, unsafe, and humiliated. The former reverend sister emphasized that what hurt her most was the church's failure to take any action after she reported the incident.
Annastasia wrote: "In 2016, while living within the convent walls, another sister saw me naked in a restroom without my consent. I was having my bath and she opened the door and went into the bathroom. That moment deeply affected me emotionally and psychologically. I felt exposed, embarrassed, unsafe, and humiliated."
Lack of Accountability
She lamented that the silence, dismissal, and lack of accountability from church leadership compounded her trauma. "What hurt even more was that when I reported the incident, nothing was done about it. The silence, dismissal, and lack of accountability became part of the trauma I carried for years," she added.
Annastasia also noted that the same sister was later involved in another scandal within the convent, which she described as too gory to write. Despite that, her own complaint about privacy violation was ignored, making her feel that her dignity did not matter.
Public Reaction
The former reverend sister's story sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some users questioned why she was so distressed by a fellow woman seeing her nakedness, while others expressed sympathy and support. One commenter, Chidimma Amedu, said: "I don't think I should have problems with my fellow man seeing my nakedness by mistake as long as you didn't touch me." Another user, Ejiofor Emmanuel, accused her of planning to be seen by a man instead.
However, others criticized the church's handling of the situation. Annastasia defended her decision to speak out, stating that healing begins when truth is no longer buried in silence. She shared her story not out of hatred but to highlight the suffering of many who endure similar violations behind closed doors.
Background of the Former Reverend Sister
Annastasia, a native of Plateau State, first gained public attention in 2025 when she made allegations of sexual harassment and institutional abuse within the Catholic Church in Nigeria. She was subsequently dismissed from the congregation in September 2025 after alleging that priests mistreat nuns. Her latest disclosure adds to the ongoing conversation about accountability and safety within religious institutions.
