Anambra Police Apprehend Suspect Posing as JAMB Coordinator
In a significant crackdown on examination fraud, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Eric Nwombu for allegedly impersonating a Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) coordinator and unlawfully possessing examination materials. The arrest, which underscores ongoing efforts to protect the integrity of public exams, occurred in Atani on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
Details of the Arrest and Recovery
According to a statement released on Saturday, April 18, by the command's spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives of the Inspector-General of Police's Safe School Initiative in Anambra acted on a tip-off to apprehend Nwombu. The suspect was reported to have collected 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) slips from candidates at a local cybercafé, raising suspicions among staff.
Ikenga detailed that when questioned by cybercafé workers, Nwombu falsely claimed to be a coordinator for the 2026 UTME in Atani. Dissatisfied with his explanation and alarmed by his activities, the workers promptly alerted police operatives in the area. Upon sighting the officers, Nwombu attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended.
Items recovered from the suspect include:
- Eight UTME slips
- An exercise book containing names and examination numbers of students
Nwombu could not provide a credible account for these materials, further implicating him in the alleged fraud.
Police Investigation and Commitment to Exam Integrity
Preliminary investigations have commenced, with the case set to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further scrutiny. Ikenga emphasized that this move aims to ensure a thorough probe into the extent of the suspect's activities and any potential accomplices.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Ikioye Orutugu, reiterated the command's unwavering commitment to safeguarding the integrity of public examinations. He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to exam processes, highlighting the importance of community cooperation in combating fraud.
This arrest comes amid broader concerns over examination malpractice in Nigeria, with JAMB frequently targeted by fraudsters seeking to exploit candidates. The police's proactive measures, such as the Safe School Initiative, are designed to prevent such incidents and maintain trust in the educational system.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to provide updates on any further developments. The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of impersonation and fraud, with potential legal repercussions for those involved.
