Five Young Lives Lost in Bulumkutu Tragedy
A devastating incident in Maiduguri, Borno State, has left a community in mourning after a collapsing fence claimed the lives of five children. The tragedy unfolded in the Bulumkutu area on the evening of Sunday, January 4, 2025.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed that the incident occurred at about 8:00 PM. A spokesperson for the command, ASP Nahum Daso, provided the heartbreaking details to the press.
Police Investigation and Immediate Response
According to ASP Daso, the Divisional Police Officer of Bulumkutu Division received a report of the collapse. "We received a report through the Divisional Police Officer of Bulumkutu Division of a fence which fell on six children," Daso stated.
The consequences were fatal. Five of the children, all reported to be under the age of 16, succumbed to their injuries. A sixth child survived but sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital for immediate medical treatment.
Daso emphasized that the police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse. "The first action by the command is that we have immediately commenced investigation into the fence, how it fell, and other issues surrounding it," he explained. The probe aims to determine if any acts of negligence contributed to the fatal accident.
Public Safety Warning Issued
In the wake of the tragedy, the police spokesperson issued a crucial appeal to residents across Borno State and Nigeria at large. He urged the public to prioritize structural integrity and child safety.
"Nevertheless, we are calling on members of the public to be mindful of structural positioning, maintain good structural standards, and keep an eye on their children," Daso advised.
