Fresh Jos Attack: Gunmen Kill Three, Injure One in Plateau Community
In a tragic incident that has heightened tensions in Plateau State, armed assailants launched a deadly attack on the Gyel Nyango Community in Jos South Local Government Area. The assault, which occurred on the evening of Friday, April 3, 2026, resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left one person injured.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen invaded the community under the cover of darkness, firing sporadically before making their escape. The sudden violence caused panic among residents, with some locals sustaining injuries during the chaotic event.
Community Leader Condemns "Senseless" Violence
Rwang Tengwong, the spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, confirmed the attack on Saturday, April 4, 2026. He described the incident as "one too many" senseless assaults targeting innocent citizens in rural areas.
"Just yesterday night, some persons came to Gyel community, which resulted in the death of three persons," Tengwong stated. "This cycle of attacks on our rural communities must stop."
The community leader called on security agencies to act swiftly in apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring they face justice. He also urged residents in Jos South, Riyom, and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
Police Response and New Security Measures
Alfred Alabo, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, provided additional details about the attack. He confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 9:20 PM on Friday, when the victims were returning from a mining site.
Alabo explained that the State Command immediately deployed a patrol team, led by the Divisional Police Officer of 'B' Division Bukuru, to the scene. The injured victim was promptly evacuated to a hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) noted that State Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and the entire community, describing the incident as a "senseless loss of lives."
In response to the attack, Commissioner Ewah ordered the immediate enforcement of several security measures:
- A statewide ban on night grazing and night mining activities
- A total ban on commercial motorcycles within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis
- A ban on commercial tricycles (popularly known as Keke-Napep) for Sunday, April 5, 2026
Alabo urged residents to comply with these directives and avoid unnecessary movements, particularly during nighttime hours. The police emphasized that these measures are aimed at preventing further violence and ensuring public safety in the region.
The attack has reignited concerns about security in Plateau State's rural communities, with calls for more robust protection and preventive measures to safeguard vulnerable populations.
