Groom Gets 30 Years for Killing Best Friend on Wedding Night

A Michigan man who married his bride and then fatally ran over his best friend on the same day following an alcohol-fueled argument has been sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison.

Sentencing Details

James Shirah, 24, was sentenced on Monday, May 11. In Genesee County court, he expressed deep remorse, stating, “The only thing I can do for the rest of my life is express my apology and remorse. ... I will forever be sorry.”

The Incident

On August 30, 2024, Shirah was driving when his vehicle struck Terry Taylor Jr. in Flint, about an hour northwest of Detroit. Earlier that day, Shirah had married Savanah Collier, and the celebration had moved to a house. An argument ensued, leading to the fatal crash.

Shirah’s attorney argued the crash was not intentional. However, prosecutors stated that Shirah left the scene, reflected, and then returned to strike Taylor, according to MLive.com.

Judge Khary Hanible remarked, “Mr. Shirah, I believe that you are not a criminal. You are, however, a killer.”

Legal Outcome

In April, Shirah pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and other offenses. He will be eligible for parole after 30 years. Taylor’s cousin, Eren Taylor, said before the sentencing, “I hope that they throw the book at you.”

Shirah’s wife is scheduled to be sentenced later in May for being an accessory to the crime.
