Police authorities in Oyo State have confirmed the arrest of a hunter who allegedly shot and killed his colleague during an expedition in Ibadan. The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the local community and prompted a swift police response.
Details of the Fatal Hunting Expedition
The Oyo State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed that the event took place on Tuesday, January 7, 2026. According to the official statement, the incident occurred at approximately 2:00 PM within the Oretan Ijaiye Forest, located in the Moniya area of the Akinyele Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Waheed Rasaki, aged 35, reported himself to the Moniya Police Division later that same day at about 9:20 PM. Rasaki, a resident of the Oretan Ijaiye Area, claimed he had mistakenly shot his fellow hunter, Femi Oyedepo, during their outing.
The victim, Oyedepo, reportedly slumped and died instantly at the scene from the gunshot wound.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Upon receiving the report, police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) promptly visited the forest location. They discovered the lifeless body of Femi Oyedepo and immediately took Waheed Rasaki into custody. The suspect remains in police detention as investigations continue.
In the official release, PPRO Ayanlade emphasized that the case highlights the command's commitment to responding swiftly to all fatalities, whether criminal or accidental, to ensure accountability and justice are served.
Separate Arrest in Saki Student Killing
In a related development from the same police briefing, authorities also announced the arrest of one Olatunji Segun in connection with the killing of a student in Saki. The incident occurred on the same date, January 7, at about 2:30 PM behind the Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic in the Challenge 1 Area.
The police responded to a distress call concerning a fight among students. During the altercation, one student was shot in the back and later died at Tunmise Private Hospital in Saki. An expended cartridge was recovered at the scene, leading to Segun's arrest. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the motive and full circumstances.
