The driver involved in the tragic accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been released from medical care. He now faces potential legal action for reckless driving.
Driver Released and Under Investigation
The driver was discharged from Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, where Anthony Joshua is still recovering from his injuries. Authorities confirmed that the driver has provided his official statement to the police. The Nigerian Police Force spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated the driver's release and ongoing cooperation with the investigation.
Simultaneously, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the Sagamu interchange, where the damaged vehicle is held, indicated that prosecution for reckless driving is a likely outcome based on their preliminary findings.
Details of the Fatal Crash Emerge
The accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the initial investigation points to a burst tyre on the passenger side of the SUV carrying Joshua.
This mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control. The vehicle then swerved and collided with a stationary truck. TRACE spokesman Babatunde Akinbiyi emphasized that excessive speed was a major contributing factor in the severity of the crash.
In a concerning development, the driver of the stationary truck allegedly fled the scene immediately after the impact. The FRSC has now declared this truck driver wanted.
Mourning the Loss and Joshua's Condition
The human cost of the crash was profound. Two members of Joshua's team, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, were killed at the scene. Their deaths were confirmed by Joshua's promotion company, Matchroom Boxing.
The company expressed profound sadness, describing the two as "close friends and team members." Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn paid tribute, calling them "two great men" and offering his deepest prayers.
Anthony Joshua, 36, was rushed to Duchess International Hospital following the crash. Medical officials have reported that the boxing star is in a stable condition as he continues his recuperation.
