Anthony Joshua's Driver Faces Court Friday Over Fatal Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash
Joshua's Driver May Appear in Court for Fatal Crash

In a significant development following the tragic accident involving British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua, his driver, Kayode Adeniyi, could be arraigned in court as early as Friday, 2 January 2026.

Police Investigation Points to Reckless Driving

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Adeniyi is currently under interrogation at the Eleweran Police Station in Abeokuta. An anonymous police officer disclosed that the driver, who is in stable condition, has provided his account of the events leading to the devastating crash. While a charging decision is expected within 48 hours, the officer noted that the ongoing bank holiday might cause some delays in the legal process.

"It is possible he could be in court on Friday but it depends how quickly the process moves, and it would be for reckless driving," the source told The Guardian. Adeniyi is facing a two-count charge of reckless driving and manslaughter.

Recap of the Fatal Collision

The incident occurred on Monday, 29 December 2025, along the notoriously busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Shagamu interchange. The Lexus SUV carrying Anthony Joshua collided with the rear of a stationary truck. According to eyewitness Adeniyi Orojo, Joshua was travelling with three other individuals at the time of the crash.

"Joshua was seated behind the driver with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash," Orojo explained. Tragically, the passenger beside the driver and the individual seated next to Joshua died instantly from the impact.

Official Findings and Ongoing Case

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has preliminarily attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking. This official assessment will likely form a crucial part of the evidence against the driver.

While Anthony Joshua survived the crash and was rushed to the hospital, the legal proceedings are now focusing on the actions of his driver. The potential court appearance this Friday marks a critical next step in a case that has gripped the nation, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety on one of Nigeria's most important highways.
