Lagos Airport Vandalism: Court Convicts 13, Sentences to 19 Months, Remands One

A Magistrate’s Court for Special Offences in Oshodi, Lagos, has delivered a verdict in a high-profile vandalism case at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA). The court convicted 13 out of 14 accused individuals, sentencing them to 19 months’ imprisonment, while one suspect was remanded in custody awaiting trial. This ruling underscores the judiciary's firm stance against criminal activities at critical national infrastructure.

Details of the Arrest and Charges

According to a statement by Adeola Mohammed, the Public Relations Officer of the Airport Police Command, the convicts were part of a group of 14 individuals accused of stealing construction materials from Terminal 1 of the airport, which is currently undergoing renovation. The suspects were arraigned before the Magistrate’s Court for Special Offences in Oshodi on April 21, 2026. During the proceedings, 13 defendants pleaded guilty to the charges, leading to their immediate conviction and sentencing. The remaining suspect, who entered a not guilty plea, was remanded, with the case adjourned to June 16, 2026 for further hearing.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The suspects were apprehended on April 20, 2026, between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. by the Joint Monitoring Task Force (JMTF) during a routine patrol of the airport facility. The JMTF, comprising personnel from the Airport Police Command and other security agencies, had intensified surveillance in response to repeated reports from project managers about missing building materials at the terminal. Upon arrival at the scene, operatives caught the suspects in possession of high-value items, including copper wires, iron components, and other construction materials. Further police investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly gained unauthorized access to the facility by impersonating workers from the construction company handling the renovation project.
