Police Accuse Rapper Lil Tjay of Instigating Fight That Led to Offset Shooting
Law enforcement officials have made serious allegations against American rapper Lil Tjay, claiming he played a pivotal role in sparking the altercation that culminated in the shooting of Offset, a prominent member of the renowned hip-hop group Migos. The incident unfolded at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, sending shockwaves through the entertainment community.
Details of the Alleged Altercation
Preliminary police reports indicate that Lil Tjay, whose real name is Tione Merritt, allegedly instructed members of his party to initiate a physical confrontation with another group of males around 7:22 p.m. on Monday evening. According to authorities, one individual from Lil Tjay's group subsequently produced a firearm and discharged it, striking Offset in the valet area of the casino premises.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Lil Tjay's attorney, Dawn Florio, vehemently refuted these claims, categorically denying the widespread false rumors circulating online that suggested her client was involved in any shooting incident. She clarified that Lil Tjay had not sustained any gunshot wounds and emphasized that he had not been charged with any shooting-related offenses, labeling contrary reports as entirely inaccurate.
Legal Consequences and Ongoing Investigation
The Seminole Police Department confirmed that Lil Tjay was taken into custody and arrested on a disorderly conduct charge specifically related to affray, which is classified as a first-degree misdemeanor. He was processed and booked at the Broward County Sheriff's Office. Police noted that a second individual detained at the scene has not faced any charges at this time, and the investigation to identify additional persons potentially involved remains active and ongoing.
Regarding Offset's condition, authorities provided an update, stating that the injured individual is currently receiving medical treatment at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, and is reported to have sustained a non-life-threatening injury.
Lil Tjay's Response and Further Allegations
After posting bail on Tuesday, Lil Tjay publicly addressed the situation, firmly denying any participation in the alleged physical altercation. In comments captured by NBC 6 Miami, he asserted, I didn't do no damn fighting, and directed derogatory remarks toward Offset before departing the scene in an SUV.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed by police, Lil Tjay is accused of engaging in a fight with Offset's associates after the shooting had already occurred. The document includes sworn statements from victims who claimed that while they were attending to their wounded friend, Offset, Lil Tjay approached them in an aggressive manner with clenched fists and began swinging at them. The confrontation reportedly ceased only upon the arrival of law enforcement officers.
The affidavit further alleges that Lil Tjay's actions during the incident caused significant terror among the public, resulted in injury to another person, and placed other casino patrons in imminent danger. Additionally, police claim that surveillance footage shows Lil Tjay recording the confrontation on his cell phone prior to the shooting of Offset.
