Father Identified as Suspect in Louisiana Mass Shooting That Killed Eight Children

A man accused of shooting eight young children dead in Louisiana on Sunday morning has been identified as Shamar Elkins, who was the father to some of the victims. The horrific incident unfolded in Shreveport, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

Details of the Shooting Rampage

Elkins, 31, a former member of the Louisiana National Guard, reportedly opened fire at a home during a domestic disturbance with his 34-year-old wife, Shaneiqua Pugh. According to former Caddo Parish Constable Patrick Young, the argument escalated into violence, leading to the tragic deaths.

The Shreveport Police Department confirmed that the suspect fatally shot eight children, with the youngest victim being just 18 months old. In total, ten people were shot, with Pugh and another woman surviving the attack. One of the women is expected to survive, while the other sustained more serious, life-threatening injuries.

Three-Location Crime Spree

The ordeal spanned three different locations. The first was the home where the children were massacred, situated just a stone's throw away from a Baptist church. Elkins then carjacked a vehicle at that location and led officers on a high-speed chase, traveling about a quarter-mile away.

He drove to a third location, where police shot and killed him during the confrontation. Police spokesman Christopher Bordelon described the crime scene as 'rather extensive' and stated, 'We do believe him to be the only individual that fired gunshots at these locations here.'

Community Response and Investigation

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux addressed the shaken community, calling the incident 'maybe the worst tragic situation we've ever had in Shreveport.' He assured residents that the investigation is ongoing and in capable hands, emphasizing the need to process the information carefully.

Background of the Suspect

Elkins previously served in the Louisiana Army National Guard from August 2013 to August 2020 as a Signal Support System Specialist and a Fire Support Specialist. An Army official noted that he had no deployments and left the Army as a private. His military background adds a layer of complexity to the investigation into the motives behind the shooting.

The Shreveport Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the domestic disturbance and the subsequent violence. Authorities are working to provide support to the survivors and the affected families as the community grapples with this devastating loss.
