Makinde Vows to Sacrifice Himself for Abducted Oyo Students

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has vowed to make the supreme sacrifice to ensure the release of 46 abducted schoolchildren and teachers. The abduction occurred in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026. Makinde also declared that Oyo State would never experience a tragedy similar to the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping.

Makinde Addresses Protesters at His Residence

According to Daily Trust, the governor made this assurance while addressing protesters at his private residence in Ikolaba, Ibadan, on Tuesday, June 16. The protest was led by Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), a social media activist. VDM organized the demonstration in response to growing insecurity and recent kidnappings in the state, particularly the abduction of pupils and their teachers a month ago.

Governor's Emotional Appeal

In his address, Governor Makinde expressed his administration's full commitment to securing the children's release, stating that no effort would be spared. He noted that sacrifices had already been made by security operatives, including the death of a military personnel. Making an emotional appeal, the governor said he was ready to make personal sacrifices if it would guarantee the safe rescue of the children. His statement read in part: “If you ask me, can I sacrifice myself for those children to come out? I will do it. I have lived a good life; I’m almost 60, and it doesn’t matter. Our children will never be in the same situation as the Chibok children.”
