The Imo State Police Command has taken decisive action following disturbing allegations of sexual assault and corruption, arresting a suspect and detaining several of its own officers.
Suspect Arrested Following Viral Video Outcry
A 24-year-old man, Wisdom Onyeaju from Umuekweye in Irete, Owerri West Local Council, is now in police custody. He faces allegations of defiling a 15-year-old girl who had returned to Imo State for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The incident came to public light after a video posted by the victim's elder sister went viral on social media.
In the emotional video, the sister narrated how an intruder forced his way into her younger sister's room and assaulted her. The family's attempt to seek justice was reportedly met with further distress. The narrator claimed that police officers stationed near the Government House demanded the sum of N100,000 before they would accept an official statement on the crime.
Police Respond to Allegations of Misconduct
The Command's spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police Henry Okoye, confirmed the developments. He stated that the arrest of Onyeaju followed credible information received from the victim's family, who had first drawn attention via the online video.
More notably, Okoye addressed the serious corruption allegations against officers. "The command has identified and detained the police officers alleged to have engaged in professional misconduct in the handling of the case," he said. An orderly room trial has been scheduled for Monday, January 12, 2026, in line with police regulations.
Commitment to Accountability and Next Steps
The police spokesperson emphasized the command's dedication to professionalism and transparency. Suspect Wisdom Onyeaju is currently undergoing investigation and will be arraigned in court upon its conclusion.
This case highlights the dual challenge of addressing severe crimes while ensuring that the institutions meant to provide justice operate with integrity. The swift detention of the accused officers signals an internal effort to hold its personnel accountable, a move closely watched by the public.
