21-Year-Old Man Arrested for Murder and Corpse Rape in Ondo State

A Magistrate's Court in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered the remand of a 21-year-old carpenter, Anthony Alabi, at the Olokuta Correctional Centre. He faces charges for the alleged murder of a 58-year-old woman, Veronica Olaseni, and theft of her belongings, with shocking admissions of intercourse with the corpse.

Court Proceedings and Charges

The defendant was arraigned by the police on two counts: murder and theft. According to the prosecutor, Inspector Folashade Adebayo, the offences occurred on March 2, 2026, around 2:30 p.m. at Iboropa-Akoko in the Akoko North-East Local Government area. The court, presided over by Magistrate Temitope Adurota, did not take Alabi's plea due to lack of jurisdiction and ordered his remand pending advice from the state's Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Details of the Crime

Inspector Adebayo detailed that Alabi strangled Veronica Olaseni to death on her farm after she identified him while he was attempting to steal her belongings. The stolen items included an Infinix phone valued at N150,000, a cutlass worth N10,000, and an Access Bank ATM card. The charges cite violations of Section 319 and Section 390 of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006.

Defendant's Confession

Alabi, who was not represented by counsel, confessed to the crimes. He stated that he went to the deceased's farm to steal cashew nuts but strangled her upon recognition. In a disturbing admission, he told the court, "I didn't want her body to waste, so I had intercourse with her corpse." This statement has added a gruesome layer to the case, highlighting the severity of the alleged acts.

Legal Next Steps

The magistrate has directed that the case file be forwarded to the DPP's office for legal advice. The case has been adjourned to June 6 for mention, as authorities continue to investigate the full extent of the offences. The remand order ensures Alabi remains in custody while the judicial process unfolds, reflecting the gravity of the charges in this high-profile criminal matter.
