Man Arrested for Murder of Girlfriend in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 26-year-old man for the brutal murder of his girlfriend. The suspect, identified as Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, allegedly stabbed 35-year-old Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu, a single mother, in the neck.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the fatal attack occurred around midnight on December 9, 2025, in Ekwulobia, located within the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. The primary motive, as confessed by the suspect, was a suspicion of infidelity.

Chibuike was not immediately apprehended. Operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka successfully tracked him down and made the arrest on January 7, 2026. The police officially announced the development in a statement released on Sunday, January 11, 2026.

Suspect's Confession and Deception

During interrogation, the suspect provided a detailed account of his actions and the events that led to the crime. He revealed that his emotional state had deteriorated after a failed business venture he attempted to establish for the victim, which left him bankrupt and deeply in debt.

In a shocking attempt to evade justice, Chibuike confessed to fabricating a story to mislead the police. He admitted to dropping a fake letter at the scene, falsely claiming he had been kidnapped by people to whom he owed money. The police have strongly dismissed earlier circulating reports based on this deception, labeling them as false and misleading.

The police investigation has included a visit to the mortuary where the deceased's body is being held, as part of standard procedural steps.

Community Outrage and Police Warning

The command noted that this tragic event has caused significant outrage within the Ekwulobia community and has sparked renewed discussions about the dangers of domestic violence and crimes stemming from intimate relationships.

In light of this, the Anambra Police Command issued a strong advisory to the public. They urged individuals to always seek lawful and peaceful avenues for resolving personal disputes. Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of reporting early warning signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent similar, avoidable tragedies.

The suspect, Anikpe Valentine Chibuike, remains in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the police investigation.
