Man Arrested for Alleged Rape and Murder of 9-Year-Old Girl in Nyeri County
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya have made a significant arrest in connection with the tragic death of a young girl in Nyeri County. The suspect, identified as Peter Njuguna, is accused of committing heinous crimes against 9-year-old Shantel Waruguru Kagema, whose body was discovered in a pit latrine.
Discovery of the Crime Scene
According to official statements released on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the investigation began when Shantel's parents reported her missing on February 8. The parents had left their home around 8:00 AM, leaving Shantel with her 4-year-old sister. When they returned at approximately 6:30 PM, they discovered Shantel was nowhere to be found and immediately alerted law enforcement.
An exhaustive search was launched, which led to the discovery of disturbing evidence in an abandoned house nearby. Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) officers documented and collected undergarments and shoes found on an old blue mattress, which were later confirmed by Shantel's mother to belong to her daughter.
Arrest and Investigation
Intelligence efforts quickly focused on Peter Njuguna, who lives in the vicinity. He was arrested and, during interrogation, led detectives to the location where he had allegedly disposed of Shantel's body in his pit latrine in Kianjathi village, Mathira West.
With assistance from members of the public, detectives retrieved the lifeless body of the minor and transported it to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Preliminary investigations revealed that on the day of the incident, Njuguna had given Shantel's younger sister Sh10 to buy sweets, leaving him alone with Shantel to commit the alleged crimes.

Upon presenting Njuguna in court, detectives secured a 21-day custodial order to detain the suspect, allowing for a comprehensive investigation.
