Delta Police Arrest Suspect for Illegal Firearm Acquisition via Snapchat
The Delta State Police Command has made a significant arrest in connection with the illegal possession of firearms, highlighting a concerning trend in criminal activities. According to official statements, the suspect, identified as Igbunu Evans, was apprehended for allegedly purchasing a Beretta pistol through social media platforms.
Details of the Arrest and Confession
SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Police Command, disclosed the arrest on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. During a press briefing, Edafe displayed the recovered weapon, emphasizing the severity of the offense. He described the firearm as a Beretta pistol, complete with a magazine and two rounds of 9mm ammunition, noting that such weapons are strictly restricted to authorized security agencies and not for civilian use.
Upon interrogation, Igbunu Evans, a resident of Sapele, admitted to acquiring the firearm through Snapchat. He revealed that he ordered the pistol from a vendor on the platform, paying a sum of N450,000 for its delivery. The suspect claimed his motivation was for personal safety, stating he wanted protection against potential threats such as unknown gunmen or kidnappers. Additionally, Evans confessed to being involved in internet fraud for a period of three to four years, linking his criminal activities to a broader pattern of illicit behavior.
Police Response and Legal Implications
SP Bright Edafe responded strongly to the arrest, connecting it to a chain of criminal activities that often escalate from one offense to another. He pointed out that internet fraud, cultism, abuse of illicit substances, and now illegal gun possession are interrelated crimes that fuel each other. Edafe stressed that it is unlawful for individuals to possess firearms like the Beretta pistol, which are designated for government security agencies only. He made it clear that no one is permitted to hold such weapons under the pretext of self-protection, as this violates Nigerian laws and poses a threat to public safety.
The suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court following the completion of investigations. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illegal arms acquisition and the need for vigilance in monitoring social media platforms for such transactions.
