German football club FC Schalke 04 has confirmed that an investigation is underway after a 65-year-old man was found dead in the toilets of their stadium, the VELTINS-Arena. The discovery was made by a cleaner during a routine inspection on Thursday, April 23.
Police were immediately called to the scene and cordoned off the area as they began their inquiry. According to German publication Bild, it is believed the man suffered a medical episode before collapsing. He had reportedly attended an event at the stadium on Wednesday, and his body was found the following day.
There is currently no indication of criminal involvement, though questions are being raised as to why no one noticed the man was missing until the next day. The man is understood to have been a local resident from Gelsenkirchen.
